FRESH SPORT CARS

Yes, we have been clamoring for these new models, and the partners Subaru and Toyota satiated our hunger this week at the Geneva Motor Show by unveiling two sports car concepts.

Subaru revealed an “architecture” concept – a unique approach to a show car. As you can see in the photos, it gives a look beneath the skin, while also previewing the shape. Toyota took a more direct route, showing a sinister black version of its FT-86 II.

Both automakers released basic dimensions, revealing the two cars to be near identical, sharing a 101-inch wheelbase and stretching about 167 inches long. Yet, clearly the sheetmetal is sculpted quite differently, given two takes on the same theme. Also, both claim to have a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine (meaning it is sourced from Subaru) and rear-wheel drive. Toyota cited a six-speed manual transmission. Previously, we had speculated that the Subaru iteration would have AWD, fitting with the brand’s identity. But apparently for packaging (the engine sits lower and further back than typical in a Subaru) and weight reasons, it will be strictly RWD.

Toyota announced that sales would begin in 2012 for Europe. No word about North American plans, though it is expected we’ll see the cars in person at the New York International Auto Show in late April, when more details will be announced. And likely a Subaru with its clothes on.
